Wood Grading

Choosing the right grade is crucial, we work with manufacturers to ensure that your specific requirements are met. The features that are taken into account when grading wood include the number and size of knots as well as the amount of sap in the wood and the color variations present. In general, the smaller the knots and lower sap content leads to a more uniform color which is a higher grade of wood.

Prime Grade is uniform in appearance with no defects, uniform colour and is aesthetically pleasing. Pin knots are allowed.

Select Grade has some minimal colour variations, no sap and an admissable knot size of up to 12mm.

Rustic Grades are very popular with three grading versions:

  • Rustic A Grade has slight colour variations, no pith or sap and knots up to a maximum of 25mm
  • Rustic AB Grade has some colour variations, no pith or sap and knots up to a maximum of 50mm.
  • Rustic BC Grade has colour varations, pth and sap and unlimited sizing on knots.
